Flying to Da Nang

November 27, 2014 by David James Leave a Comment

We decided to fly down to Da Nang from Hanoi rather than get on the sleeper bus or the sleeper train that was going to take around  14h vs just over a 1 hour flight. We were told that it is most convenient and reliable to fly with Vietnam airlines, but with booking last minute and prices were over $100USD per person, it wasn’t going to be a feasible option.

Looking around online and doing some comparisons, I came across Vietjet. Someone had mentioned to me that they weren’t as reliable and often had delays and  cancellations. But the prices they had on offer were amazing. £60 for 2 tickets one way. Bargain I thought…but what would be the risk?

This is what kept on playing in my head. And knowing how nervous my wife is about flying, I had to make a calculated decision.

I read reviews on Tripadvisor which helped, but there were mixed reviews. Some said that they had no or little issues. Others were saying that they would never fly with them again.

The best advice though was:

If you are flying without a commitment to a time schedule, and you want a bargain, then it is ok to fly with them. If you are flying to a deadline or another flight connection, pay the extra fare and go with Vietnam airlines.

Hence, with no deadlines in place for us, we flew via Vietjet.

To my surprise, I felt like they were quite a good airline. Food wasn’t included, and it was basic perks, but you get what you pay for, and to get some extra perks only cost a few US dollars. ($2-5).

I have flow Ryan Air in Europe several times and I would have rated the service much better than Ryan Air. It may have even been on par or better than Easyjet.

In terms of value for money, it was incredible.

There was a bit of turbulence, but we arrived in Danang hassle free, apart from the 1 hour delay for our flight. But all was good in the end.

Being serenaded over the bonfire at a local homestay in Sapa

November 18, 2014 by David James Leave a Comment

We were able to do an overnight stay with a local family in Sapa.

They offered us food, shelter and insight into their way of life.

We were fortunate to be serenaded over the bonfire by one of the girls in the group.

Here is a clip of us capturing this beautiful moment.

Randomly bumping into Tracy Poon (a friend from London) on the side of the mountain hiking in Sapa, Vietnam.

The world is a small place. A lot smaller than we all think. This was proven to me again, as whilst starting our trek in the mountains and rice terraces in Vietnam, who should I bump into other than Tracy Poon (although I had her name mixed up and called her Sabrina to get her attention) hiking in the same place.

I’ve always said that great minds think alike. 🙂

Check out the reaction below.
